The property was originally part of a "poor farm" in 1835. In the mid 1800's Belknap County added substantial acreage to the property, including the portion that now contains the industrial park and the cemetery with which we are concerned. At that time, the property was also used as an alms house or "Poor Farm". As the dates on the tombstones range in time from 1875 to 1891. There was a poor Farm or Belnap County Farm on the property. The information is that the graves are from some of the residents of the County Farm or known as the Poor Farm. There are gravestones of many women and children as well as elderly. Some headstones are numbered 1 through 60 with no names. After the farm was closed the Laconia State School was on the same property, although their cemetery is on Chemung Rd in Meredith NH. This area is much nicer and isn't a swamp like the cemetery on Chemung Rd.
We are working on a complete list of names. Those known are posted with pics, we hope to ID the numbered headstones.
These are my notes regarding Primrose and the deceased was a Joseph B. L. Smith and his son Caleb M. Smith: "The County Home Cemetery is located off Primrose Lane in Laconia. Avid Engineering has a facility there. Drive up the right side of the building and park in the rear. From the right rear corner of the parking lot you can see and access the cemetery. There are about twenty marked stones with names. Then there are 56 numbered stones numbered 1 thru 56. I believe these to be burial sites and that there was a book listing who is in each. I am told the book got destroyed. I asked at city hall and was told it is the counties cemetery. I contacted the county and was told the city maintains it. I have not given up yet. David Hough email 1/20/2011."
