US Army Photographer. The last US Airman to die in combat in World War II, three days after the Japanese government surrender. On August 18, 1945, aboard his B-32 over Tokyo monitoring the cease-fire, he was severely wounded by canon fire from rogue Japanese fighters, one of which was piloted by the famous Japanese ace, Lt. Saburo Sakai. Sgt. Marchione was unable to respond to on-board medical treatment and died before the plane landed successfully at Okinawa.
