John Abbas
John Michael Abbas, 60, of Newport, Ore., died Sept. 26, 2011 at Avamere Newport Rehabilitation facility in Newport.
He was born Jan. 8, 1951 to Geraldine (Geri) and Henry Abbas Jr. at the Toledo Hospital. He graduated from Toledo High School in 1969. As a teenager, he delivered the Oregonian and worked as a box-boy and later as a clerk at Toledo Thriftway.
In 1970, John joined the Navy and served aboard the U.S. Sperry. He was stationed at the Adak Island Naval Base, near the western end of the Aleutian Islands, Alaska. He served his country in Vietnam and was honorably discharged in December 1975.
He married Janet Garcia on Oct. 20, 1972. They had two daughters, Michelle Rene and Cheryn Ray. After the military, John returned to Toledo, where he worked at the Cascadia Mill and then went to work in the bag plant at Georgia-Pacific.
In 1976, John was involved in an auto accident that left him completely disabled. He was cared for at the New Lincoln Hospital in Toledo until it closed. His parents then cared for him at home. About 16 years ago, he moved into Newport Rehab, where he remained until his death.
He was preceded in death by his father, Henry Abbas Jr.; his paternal grandparents, Ella and Henry Abbas Sr.; and maternal grandparents, Thelma and Kenneth Bilyeu.
He is survived by his daughters, Michelle Abbas of Lake Stevens, Wash. and Cheryn (Kevin) Smith of Fayetteville, N.C.; his mother, Geri Abbas of Toledo; brothers, Dennis (Cecilia) Abbas and Clifford Abbas; sister, Debby (Chet) Lee; and granddaughters, Morgan, Amber and Cynthia Smith.
The family will have a private graveside service at Eureka Cemetery. There will be a public memorial service at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, at the Toledo Elks Lodge, where John was a member for 40 years. A reception will follow the service.
