Emmer Lou Casteen, 85, of Rocky Point passed peacefully from her earthly life on Saturday, November 17, 2012 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCareCenter.

She was born September 27, 1927 in Pender County, the daughter of the late George Thomas and Georgianna Costin Abrams. She was preceded in death by her husband, Favel M. Casteen; granddaughter, Kristal Long, sisters, Geneva McIntyre and Lula Eakins; and brother, Thomas Abrams.

Emmer is survived by her children, Mary Catherine Casteen Johnson of Wilmington, Janet Casteen Long (Donnie) of Leland, Preston Lee Casteen (Connie) and Charles Edward Casteen (Lois), all of Rocky Point, and Patricia Casteen Northcott (Jim) of Willard; grandchildren, Rodney Johnson, Jeff Johnson, Heather Kendall (Reid), Courtney Caudle, Lee Casteen (Catherine), Dustin Casteen, Brooke Casteen, Matthew Casteen, Jennifer Craig, and Lynn Sholar (Eddy); great grandchildren, Molly Johnson, Zacrye Kendall, Seth Kendall, Hunter Kendall, Aaryn Carter, Jaxon Caudle, Trey Casteen, Noah Casteen, Natalie Casteen, Paige Ramos, Kameron Craig, Leanna Pfeiffer, Khloe Sholar, Kinslee Wilson, Lucas Casteen, Isabella Sholar, Jasmine Cameron, and Jaysen Sholar; sisters, Addie Norris of Garland and Lucy Wood of Watha; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Emmer was a long time member of Riley's Creek Baptist Church.

Emmer was a devoted wife and loving, caring mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She was an excellent homemaker filling her home with joy, sunshine and good humor. All who knew Emmer were impressed by her witty personality and indomitable spirit. She fought her illness the same way she lived her life with an internal strength and sense of purpose, never giving up hope. Emmer valued her family above all else. Enjoying the simple things of life, Emmer loved gardening, flowers and God's entire beautiful world. Cherished memories of Emmer will always remain in our hearts.

Funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 19, 2012 at Riley's Creek Baptist Church with The Rev. Jim Herchenhahn officiating. Burial will follow in Riverview Memorial Park.
