Son of James Barringer and Mary Stocks.

In 1898 he enlisted as a Private in Co C, 4th Illinois Infantry and then served as Master-of-Arms 2nd Class in the US Navy from 1899 to 1903 during the Spanish-American War.

He was a coal miner in southern IL, then was a detective for Pinkerton in Chicago.

He married Jessie Hinchcliff about 1904.
