Gideon was shot in the left ankle, a wound that forced him to be discharged for disability on 24 Jul 1862. His brother Abram was discharged for disability on the same day. Their brother John was taken prisoner at Shiloh, and he died in a “rebel prison” on 25 Jun 1862.
As a veteran-recruit, he re-enlisted from Berlin on 18 Nov 1863 into the 32nd Wisconsin. He was transferred to the 16th Wisconsin on 4 Jun 1865. He mustered out with the unit on 12 Jul 1865 at Louisville, KY.
