He was born May 1, 1933 to the late George Rhoan Gowen, Jr. and Evelyn Shackleford Gowen. After high school, he attended the University of Georgia where he was in ROTC and Sigma Chi Fraternity. Following college, he served as Captain in the United States Air Force where he was a pilot and flight instructor. He was a member of the Folkston United Methodist Church and a member of the Georgia Oilmans Association. As president of Gowen Oil Company and lifelong resident of Folkston, he participated in numerous community organizations and activities touching many people's lives.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Charna Williamson Gowen; four sons, Mark (Jane) Gowen, Curtis Gowen, Doug (Valerie) Gowen, and Chris (Alyson) Gowen; eight grandchildren, Luke (Becky) Gowen, Sarah Gowen, Matt Gowen, Abby Gowen (Tyler) Fleming, Ridge Gowen, Marissa Gowen, Erin Gowen, and Anna Gowen; two great-grandchildren, Kimbree Gowen and Mark Gowen.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, December 29th at 3:00 PM at the Folkston United Methodist Church with Rev. Dave Willett officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Charlton Memorial Hospital, 2449 Third Street, Folkston, Georgia 31537. Arrangements are under the direction of Shepard Funeral Home in Folkston, Georgia.
