Ambrose Sherman Pauley was the son of Shadle Randolph and Malinda Morris Pauley, and grandson of Jonathan, Jr., and Martha Lambert Paulley, and Ambrose III and Mary Polly Bevins Morris. His siblings were Martha Victoria, John Estill, Mary Elender, Jane, Louisa J., Thomas Harrison, Joseph Cooper, Arminda Flora, Nancy Genevra, Tobias Wagner, William Samuel, Henrietta, and Lena Ennis. On November 27, 1890, he married Rose Ellen Fields, daughter of William Westley and Annie Bond Fields. Their children were Wilda, Shadle, Maudie, John H., Lacy, Laudie, and possibly another baby who died at birth. Ellen died on May 3, 1912, on her forty-first birthday.

On August 29, 1917, in Martin County, Ambrose married Nancy Mullins Newsome Chapman (1865-?) , daughter of Alexander and Mary Polly Osborne Mullins. The 1930 census shows him as a Justice of Peace living in Inez, and married to Amy (Jude/Fredrick) Stepp (6/16/1862 - 8/4/1948), daughter of Martin and Polly Rutherford Jude. After Amy's death, he lived among his children, spending the last eighteen months of his life with his daughter Maudie Pauley Lowe and her husband Harvey.
