Columbus, Indiana
Sat., January 14, 1939
Mrs. Emma A. Abbett, 90, wife of William A. Abbett, 96, one of the three surviving Civil war veterans in the city, died at 3 o'clock this morning at their home, 531 Chestnut street.

In spite of her advanced age Mrs. Abbett had been in good health, with exception of her eyesight, until December when she became ill. She was able to be up each day, until last Monday, when she suffered a stroke of paralysis and never rallied.

The body is at the Hege & Flanigan funeral home where the casket will be open from 10 o'clock Sunday morning until Monday afternoon, when it will be moved to the Tabernacle Christian .church. Services will be held there at 2 o'clock by the Rev. T. K. Smith, pastor of the church. Burial will be made in City cemetery.

Mrs. Abbett was one of the oldest women of the city and she was well known. She was born and spent her early life on the old Lafever farm west of the city. She was married to Mr. Abbett in 1868 and they came to Columbus to make their home. If she had lived, they would have observed their 71st wedding anniversary on Feb. 1. [March 10th.] Both were looking forward to the event with much interest.

Mrs. Abbett was a member of the Tabernacle church for 71 years and was an active worker in religious circles throughout her life. She was a charter member of the G. L. Reeves Bible class, a charter member of the Ladies' Aid society and served as its president several times, was a member of the Missionary society and was one of the first deaconesses of the church. She was also a member of the Friday Parchesi club.

A daughter, Mrs. Charles Reeves, preceded her in death. Surviving besides the husband, are a granddaughter, Mrs. Fred Sulton; a great-grandson, William Howard Sulton; a brother, Sam Lafever, and a sister, Mrs. Addle Bray, all of this city.
