Robert attended Morganton High School where he played football and met Laura Elizabeth Mundy.
After graduation Robert served in World War II in China, India, Burma and surrounding islands near Japan. His mission was to infiltrate the enemy lines and bring back intelligence data, destroy communications posts, ammunition dumps and fuel supplies. His unit with the O.S.S. was honored at the C.I.A. building in Washington, DC by both President George H. Bush and George W. Bush.
After he came home from the war Robert and Laura Mundy wed and attended Appalachian Teachers College. After graduation he went on to teach until retirement.
He is survived by three sons, 3 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
