Passed peacefully on Thursday, March 28, 2013 surrounded by her family. Born in Philadelphia, PA, the eldest of James and Helen Gillespie's three children, she graduated from the Cathedral School and John W. Hallahan Catholic Girl's School. While working as a medical secretary at Hahnemann University Hospital, she met her future husband, U. S. Naval Cmdr. Morris J. Damato. Following tours of duty with the Navy in Philadelphia, California, Florida and Washington, DC, she and her husband retired to Stafford, VA and quickly became active in St. William of York Catholic Church and various organizations. After raising their six children, she and her husband never sat still. She loved the beach as evidenced by annual trips to Sanibel Island, FL.; regular visits to their home near the Delaware shore, and annual trips abroad. She volunteered with multiple organizations with her church and valued her many close friends. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her children, their spouses and 14 grandchildren. Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Morris J. Damato; her children and grandchildren, Neil Damato (MaryAnn) of Chester Springs, Pa., children Jaclyn, Katherine and Nicholas; Maureen Massie (Michael) of Alexandria, Va.; James Damato (Patricia) of Valencia, Calif., and children Lauren, Jessica (Zach) Patrick and Logan; John Damato (Rexann) of Manassas, Va., and children Hope, Grace and Olivia; Ellen Papp ( Huba) of Reston, Va.. and children Brendan and Siena; Mark Damato ( Kristin) of Arlington, Va., and children Collin and Sophia; and multiple nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Patricia Gibson and her brother, James Gillespie. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 1 at Covenant Funeral Service, Stafford Chapel. A Mass of celebration will be held at Noon on Tuesday, April 2 at St. William of York Catholic Church. Burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Quantico National Cemetery.
