J.W. Abbott was born Nov. 30, 1830, at Culpepper Co. Va., died Jan. 18, 1901, at Republic Kansas, aged 70 years, 2 months.

He joined the Lutheran church in Ohio when about 18 years old. He afterward moved to McLean county, Ill. where he joined and helped to establish the first Baptist church in that county.

September 4 1856 he was united in marriage to Malinda White from which union there were born eleven children, five of whom, three sons and two daughters survive him.

He came to Republic Co. in Feb. 1891 and shortly after, himself, wife and two daughters joined the Baptist church at this place. During his membership he was made trustee and treasurer.

He joined the Odd Fellows here and has been a Mason for 30 years.

The funeral services were conducted from the Baptist church Sunday January 20th 1901 and he was laid to rest with Masonic honors in the Republic Cemetery. Another good man gone to his long home full of years and honor.
