Mrs. Markham attended Morehead Elementary School, Julian S. Carr Jr. High School and graduated from Durham High School in 1938 serving as the May Queen her senior year. She graduated from St. Mary's Junior College in 1940 where she was a member of the May court.
Mrs. Markham was a homemaker, was active in the Durham community and for over 60 years was a member of St. Philips Episcopal Church. She served St. Philips many years on the Altar Guild and the Woman's Auxiliary and was president of the Episcopal Churchwomen. She was also a member of the Durham Junior League and volunteered weekly for many years at Oldham Towers assisting senior citizens. She became a member of St. Andrews-by-the-Sound Episcopal Church after moving to Wilmington in 1998.
Mrs. Markham was predeceased by her husband, John Edward Markham, a Durham attorney; by her parents and sisters, Mary Powers Broocks Skinner and Lucy Broocks Adams.
She is survived by her children, John E. Markham, Jr. and wife, Sally Buie Markham of Durham, Elsie Broocks Markham Kale and husband, James Edward Kale III, of Charlotte and Samuel Powers Markham of Wilmington and by a longtime family friend, Jimmy L. Taylor of Wilmington. Also surviving are her five grandchildren, John E. Markham, III and wife, Jennifer Burlington Markham, of Raleigh, Charles Buie Markham of Durham, Thomas Broocks Markham of Arlington, VA., J. Edward Kale IV and Virginia Kale Shaw and husband, Charles Alderman Shaw, of Charlotte; four great grandchildren, John E. Markham IV and William Anderson Markham of Raleigh, and Lucy Alderman Shaw and Mary Charles Shaw of Charlotte, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday in Old Maplewood Cemetery, with Episcopal Deacon Sarah Wilson Woodard officiating, assisted by the Rev. Albert Nelius.
