1918-2005

Delmar Hugh "Del" Landen, 87, of Wheatland died July 5 at his home in Wheatland.

He was born Jan. 8, 1918, on the family farm homestead, near Monarch, in Sheridan County to William and Elizabeth (Potter) Landen. He graduated in Big Horn in 1936.

He enrolled at the University of Wyoming in 1940, left in 1942 to join the Army, serving 3? years, mostly in the European Theatre with the 80th Infantry Division. He received the Bronze Star Award during the Battle of the Bulge in later stages of the war.

Upon returning home, he completed his degree in animal science at the University of Wyoming and was employed by the Agricultural Extension Service as Assistant County Agent at Torrington in July 1946.

He married Jean Lindeman on July 3, 1947, in Pactola, S.D.

He worked as a Platte County agent for 28 years until his retirement in December 1975.

He then worked at First National Bank of Wheatland for eight years, retiring in 1983.

He served on the school board in Wheatland during the 1960s. He was an active member of The Congregational Church, which later became United Church of Christ upon a merger with the Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was a member of the National Association of County Agricultural Agents, receiving their distinguished service award in 1958. He served as president of the Wyoming Association in 1957 He received the meritorious service award from Epsilon Sigma Phi in December, 1971, and was elected to Gamma Sigma Delta, National Honor Society of Agriculture in May 1972. He was an active member of the University of Wyoming Alumni Board, as a committee member he instigated the purchase of the Forbes family home on Grand Avenue in Laramie, now the Alumni House. He served for more than 20 years on the Cowboy Joe Board. He received the Athletic Department Award in 1992 for having had football tickets for 50 years and received the prestigious White Hat Award from the Executive Board of the Cowboy Joe Club. He was named to the Agriculture College Wall of Fame in 1990. The Wyoming Chapter of College Hall of Fame named Del the Outstanding Fan Award in 2004 in both college and high school divisions.

He is survived by his three children, Peggy Bohl of Boise, Idaho, Mac Landen and James Landen, both of Cheyenne; a sister, Beulah Conley of Dubois; two brothers, Orville Landen of Dubois and Jerry Landen of Wheatland; six grandchildren ; and a great granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jean, on April 11, 2002; and a brother, Wayne Landen.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. today at the United Church of Christ in Wheatland with Rev. Les Ludlam officiating.

Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Jacque Schmiedt, Norb Olind, Tom Bramlet, Chuck Shellhart, Arlowe Hulett, Rodger Schroeder, Bill Stafford, Don Wedemeyer, Britt Wilson, Gale Rutherford, Greg Garton, Jerry Cundall, Richard Johnson and Lee Johnson .
