Barbara Fern Alsobrook

Funeral services for longtime Cortez resident Barbara "Fern" Alsobrook will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, August 13 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Empire Chapel. Fern will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband at Cedar Grove Cemetery following the services.

Visitation has been set for Sunday afternoon from 3 to 5 p.m. at Ertel Memorial Chapel.

Fern was born one of eleven children to Zachary Taylor and Minnie Day (Keeling) Allen on October 14, 1931 in Texico, N.M. She passed away at her Cortez home on Thursday, August 9, 2012 at the age of 80.

Fern married Ray J Alsobrook on December 22, 1948 in Falls Church, Va. Together the couple shared 55 years of marriage before Ray's death in 2004. A licensed cosmetologist, Fern owned and operated the Hair Affair located at the same spot on west Montezuma Avenue for 32 years. The Hair Affair is still family owned within the third generation. Fern was such a family oriented person and much of her time was spent focused on the family. She felt a strong conviction in instructing and exampling to the children a right way of living and making good decisions. Fern could always be "counted in" to attend family reunions. Fern's recreation was spent playing solitaire and dominoes. She enjoyed busying her hands with quilting, crocheting and sewing and loved fishing the local lakes.

Surviving Fern are her three children, Margie Wood, Janice Alsobrook and Mike Alsobrook all of Cortez; two grandchildren, Jenny Bashore and husband, Bill of Cortez and Matt Wood of Flagstaff, Ariz.; and three great grandchildren, Taylor, Erin and Ian Bashore all of Cortez. Fern was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Alsobrook; a son, Jackie Ray Alsobrook; her parents; and her ten brothers and sisters, Bill, Whetzel, Shelly, Jim, George, Ted, Velma, Hester, Roberta, and Margaret.

Memorial contributions can be made in memory of Barbara "Fern" Alsobrook with Hospice of Montezuma, PO Box 740, Cortez.
