Lloyd Raymond Holmes, 89, Vermillion, died May 21, 1990 at Dakota Hospital.

Mr. Holmes was born in Hancock, IA, to Daniel and Minnie (Boos) Holmes. He married Mamie Dean on Oct. 18, 1919 in Sioux City, IA.

He lived most of his life in Clay County and Vermillion. He owned and operated Holmes Welding, where he worked until retirement.

Mr. Holmes was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Vermillion. He was very active in church and community organizations.

Survivors include his wife, Mamie, Vermillion; 3 sons, Darold, Independence, MO, Robert, Henderson, NV, and Roger, Vermillion; 4 daughters, Mrs. Elmer (Marjorie) Sorensen, Mrs. Charles (Frances) Lefler, Glennys M. Harrington, and Mrs. Arnold (Shirley) Girard, all of Vermillion; 24 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and 8 great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Wednesday, May 23 from 2 to 6 pm at Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home in Vermillion, and from 7 to 8 pm at Trinity Lutheran Church. There will also be a prayer service Wednesday at the church, beginning at 8pm.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 24 at 10:30am at Trinity Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Paul Matchan and the Rev. Gary Westgard officiating. Burial will be in Bluff View Cemetery.

Honorary casket bearers will be Ed Elliot, Les Bernston, Bernard Olson, Herman Walraven, Cleland Cook, Hans Miller, Warren Myron, Howard Morse, Harlan Schott and Jerry Bernard. Casket bearers will be grandsons Marvin Lefler, Gary Holmes, Thomas Sorensen, Michael Harrington, Gregory Girard, Robbie Holmes and Karl Holmes.
