Althea was born on January 4, 1933 in Wilmore, KS, the daughter of Lloyd L. and Margaret Baldwin Alder. She died on June 12, 2013 at the University of Kansas Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters: Beatrice Odell of Protection, KS, Sarah Mace Evans of Claflin, Kansas, and Helen Haskell of Wellington, KS; and, four brothers: Rudyard Alder of Humboldt, NE, James B. Carl Alder of Ellinwood, KS, Lloyd Alder Jr., Spokane, WA and John Alder (infant). She is survived by 21 nieces and nephews and their extended families. Althea graduated from Wilmore High School in 1951 and attended Fort Hays State University. She enlisted in the Women's Army Corps (WAC) in 1952 and was selected to attend the Leader's Course where highly qualified women are trained as potential non-commissioned officers. She was assigned to the field training section of S-4 (supply) and went on to become a Supply Sergeant. Her service experience allowed her to travel the world including stationing assignments in Germany, France and Japan. She played on basketball and softball teams throughout her time in the service. When she returned to the US, she was assigned to Fort Sheridan, IL and got her first exposure to being an entrepreneur by opening a beauty salon on the base.

She used her organizing skills to transition to civilian life and joined the Solo Cup Company in operations management and from there, joined the William A. Robinson Agency in client management. Althea was a partner, founder and owner of two businesses. In 1979, she and her two partners opened their first business, The Lake Forest Tanning Salon in Lake Forest, IL. In 1980, they formed A-Three Services Agency Ltd., Northbrook, IL, which grew into a full-service fulfillment company providing domestic and international custom-designed, flexible programs in materials management, distribution, e-commerce, mail order catalogs and consumer response promotions (sweepstakes, refunds, rebates and contests). Althea served as the CEO and President until she retired in 2010.


Graveside inurnment service is at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 1, 2013, at the Wilmore Cemetery in Wilmore, KS, with Rev. Gary Merritt presiding and full military honors.
