Richmond Democrat, Richmond, Mo. 3-2-1882:
Willis Abbott, one of our old and much esteemed citizens, died suddenly on Thursday night last, at his residence in this city, having reached the advanced age of 71 years. Mr. Abbott was an active man and where there was work to do he could be found. He was a carpenter by trade and has assisted in building many of the houses now standing in this city. On Thursday last he was around town as usual and if he uttered any especial complaints, we did not hear of it. He went home at the usual hour, about dark, and busied himself with mending up of the fire in his room up stairs, without attracting any particular notice from the remainder of the family and it was not known that he was sick, until his groans and unusual noise attracted the attention of those in the room below. On going up stairs he was found insensible on the floor. The best medical aid in town was at once secured but the white-winged messenger of death had made its call, and at 3 o'clock on Friday morning his spirit took its flight into the region of the unknown, he never having at any time regained consciousness after the attack. His remains were laid away by kind friends in the city cemetery on Friday where it was followed by a large concourse of friends.
