Laura Abstance Foxworthy Dixon, formerly of Denmark, South Carolina died Sunday, December 14, 2003, at Cherokee Village Nursing Home in Centre, Alabama.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17, at Denmark First Baptist Church, South Beech Avenue. Burial will be in the Denmark Cemetery.

Ms. Dixon was born May 18, 1910, in Bamberg County, South Carolina, the sixth of nine children born to Laurie and Virginia Hightower Abstance. After completing high school, she attended St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Jacksonville, Florida. While living in Florida, she met and married Alexander Montgomery Foxworthy and moved to Atlanta, where their two children, Jimmy A. and Rose E. Foxworthy were born.

During World War II, she was employed by the Savannah Shipyard, where she participated in the building and launching of U.S. Liberty ships. In 1945, she married Marton Jackson Marshall, and they moved to Sandersville, Georgia. While living there, she was employed by Rawlings Sanitarium for a time.

She later returned to Denmark and was "the Avon Lady" to many. Her first grandchild called her "Paw Paw" -- a name that came to be widely used by family and friends. Her later years were spent in the Atlanta area until moving to Alabama in 1999.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Rose and William McGee of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina; four grandchildren and spouses, Jeffery and Pamela Gregg Foxworthy, Jennifer and Ronnie Watts, Patti and Scott MacDonald, and Jay and Rhonda Foxworthy; nine great-grandchildren, Jamie Watts, Molly, Maeve and Mauren McDonald, and Jordan, Julianne, Blake, Landyn and Sydney Foxworthy, all of Atlanta; a sister-in-law, Margaret Abstance of Denmark; and 10 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, Jimmy A. Foxworthy; a sister, Mattie Reid; and three brothers, Lionel, Joseph and Robert Abstance.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, at Mercer Funeral Home, U.S. Highway 78 East, Denmark.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Duke Children's Hospital, 512 S. Mangum St., Suite 400, Durham, NC 27701, or Camp Sunshine for Children with Cancer, 1850 Clairmont Road, Decatur, GA 30033-3405.
