Joe was raised in Mitchell County until 1934 and graduated from ACCHS High School in Effingham, KS in 1941. He was a farmer, stockman and an accomplished carpenter. Joe and his wife, Alice, lived in the Netawaka community from 1946 to 1997 before moving to Holton. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Holton and was involved in 4-H for many years. He was married to Alice Poos on December 25, 1942 in Lancaster, Kansas. She survives of the home. Other survivors include his daughters; Nancy J. Bower (Don) of Topeka, KS and her children,Tammy L. Caffrey (Mark), Donna J. Lehman (Daniel); Marsha E. Abarr (Bill) of Kirbyville, MO and her children, Marsene E. Feldt (Nate), Charlene M. Moran (Richard), J. Scott Fund, Joe L. Fund (Andrea); Linda L. Wenger of Holton, KS and her children, Jennifer J. Dennon (David) and Jannelle L. Welliver (Rick); Sheryl A. "Sherry" Burns (Rick) of Holton, KS and her children, Dean M. Burns and Robyn S. Burns; his son, Stephen D. "Steve" Patterson (Donna) of Holton and his children, Katie J. Ingels (Kyle), Casey L. Patterson (Kisha), Lyndee M. Stabel (Taylor) and Annie N. Patterson; 23 great-grandchildren, Shannon Caffrey, Emily & Megan Lehman, Harrison & Atticus Feldt, Allyson, Trent & Grace Moran, A. Blake & J. Ethan Fund, Cody, Ashton & Colton Fund, Samantha Dennon , Josh & Jessica Wenger, Bryce Denton and Taylor Welliver, Kolden & Kallan Ingels, Rowan & Dawson Patterson, Reece D. Burns and Addyson C. & Comyn W. Schumaker. He was preceded in death by an infant grandson, William Edwin Fund; his sister, Helen Caldwell and his brothers, Earl and Harold Patterson. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Interment will be in Holton Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
