Mickey passed away Wednesday morning, July 31, 2013, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont. Mildred "Mickey" Irene (Aakre) Gulla was born Dec. 20, 1918, in Martin County, Minn., the daughter of Andrew and Bertha (Fotland) Aakre. She attended country school near Welcome, Minn., and in South Silver Township before attending and graduating from Fairmont High School. On Feb. 17, 1944, Mickey was united in marriage to Joseph R. Gulla Jr. in Eveleth, Minn. Mickey and Joe resided in Fairmont where Mickey worked at Paulson's Pharmacy and Sovell Jewelry. This union was blessed with six children. Mickey and Joe shared nearly 42 years together before Joe passed away on Jan. 9, 1986. Mickey was a baptized and confirmed member of Waverly Lutheran Church and was more recently a member of Grace Lutheran Church. She was active in the Historical Society and Lutheran Women's Caucus. Mickey was most proud of her membership in the National Federation of Business and Professional Women and held many offices throughout the years. Mickey most enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She also enjoyed tending plants, crossword puzzles, e-mailing and playing computer games like solitaire and free cell, and was an avid reader. Newspaper and magazine articles were cut out and shared with others. She found magic in all of life's simplest things. She was young at heart and her mind was always alert.
