M.J. Purkey married Mary Jane "Marthy" Hull on December 23, 1874. They had 3 children:
Nellie Jane "Jennie", William David, and Lillian Daisy "Lillie" Purkey, b. abt. May, 1881

After his first wife died in June, 1881, he then married Laura Lorina Humphreys on December 9, 1883. They had 5 children: Murph, George Smith, Pearl Dillia, Mary Ellen, and Sidney Everett.

Death of Michael J. Purkey

Michael Jonathan Purkey, born November 23, 1952, died at one o’clock this morning. Mr. Purkey was one of Hamblen County’s oldest and most beloved citizens.

He was the oldest child and last surviving member of twelve children in one of the pioneer families of Hamblen County.

Mr. Purkey was sick for two years and for the past twenty-seven years had lived retired on his historic old farm about four miles north of Morristown. He was a carpenter in the active years of his life.

He was converted at the age of 21 and lived an earnest and consistent Christian his entire life. He was a temperance man, a good citizen who feared God, and loved his country.

His first wife was Miss Mary Jane Hull of the Dover Community.

He is survived by his widow, Laura Humphreys Purkey, and the following children: Wm. D. Purkey, Landon, Mo; Mrs. R. D. Carter, Wabasso, Fla; Mrs. J. D. Tittle, Jacksonville, Fla; S. E. Purkey, Detroit, Mich.; George S. Purkey and Mrs. E. M. Horner of Morristown.

He was preceded in death by two children, Miss Jennie and the late Murph M. Purkey.

Surviving also are a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren and other relatives.

Mr. Purkey had been a Mason for nearly fifty years, members of this fraternity having charge of the last rites.

Funeral services will be held at Liberty Hill Church Wednesday, morning at 10 o’clock, with internment in the church cemetery.

Preceding the services, the remains will lie in state at the church between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., and preceding nine o’clock will be at Stetzer Funeral Home.

Serving as pall bearers will be James L. Purkey, Henderson Purkey, Shields Purkey, Charlie Purkey, George Morelock, Randolph Range,. Bruce Crosby, and Powell Crosby.

The flowers will be cared for by nieces.
