Charles P. "Tom" Abbe, 66, of South Sioux City died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at his residence following a brief illness.

Mr. Abbe was born Feb. 26, 1935, in South Sioux City, the son of Phillip F. and Melvina I. (Jones) Abbe. He graduated from South Sioux City High School in 1952.

He then served his country for 30 years. He spent 12 years in the U.S. Navy, serving in the Korean War from Feb. 3, 1953, to Nov. 28, 1955. He spent 10 years on inactive service before serving eight years in the U.S. Air Force in the Vietnam War from July 29, 1970, to Nov. 30, 1974. While in the service, he served three overseas tours, one in Korea, two in Vietnam and one in Thailand.

He married Barbara C. Sabatino on Nov. 25, 1961, in Waukegan, Ill. After his military service, he was employed in construction with IBP, and as a lineman with the city of South Sioux City for 13 years before retiring.

He was a former member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Fraternal Order of Eagles. He was an avid Husker fan.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home, with the Rev. Nathan Houfek officiating. Burial will be in Dakota City Cemetery, with military rites. Visitation will be 2 to 8:30 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Survivors include his wife; five sons, Thomas of Rochester, Minn., Phillip and his wife, Kay of St. Joseph, Mo., Toby and his wife, Paula of Yankton, S.D., Hoby and his wife, Marsha of South Sioux City, and Joseph of South Sioux City; two daughters, Melanie Wilde of South Sioux City, and Phyllis and her husband, Greg Graves of South Sioux City; two brothers and their wives, William "Bill" and Loes of South Sioux City, and Michael and Sue of Sergeant Bluff; a sister, Jean Stingley of South Sioux City; 17 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Phillip and Melvina; and twin sons, John and Joseph.

Pallbearers will be Ron, Don and David Stingley, Brad Jensen, Rick Carney and Rick Miller. Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Hoover and Shane Cain.
