Longtime Juneau resident and educator, Avis Janice Aamot, died Dec. 20, 2001, at Shattuck Manor.
Born Dec. 30, 1917 in Velva, N.D., to Edmund and Bernice Aamot, she graduated from Moorehead State University in Minnesota and began her teaching career in Crookston, Minn. She traveled to Juneau in 1948 aboard the SS Baranof and, with a special knack for engaging children, taught first grade for 27 years with the Juneau School District.
After retirement in 1975 in Juneau, she enjoyed traveling, volunteering at the Bartlett Regional Hospital gift shop, at the cruise ship dock kiosk for the Juneau Convention and Visitors Bureau, and at the Alaska State Museum gift shop.
She was a master needle worker, creating many gifts for family and friends, and also enjoyed other crafts, most especially the art rosemaling. She enjoyed the company of and entertaining for friends and family and was known for her ability to tell a good story, the family said.
She was a member of the Resurrection Lutheran Church, the Pioneers of Alaska, the Juneau-Douglas Retired Teachers, the Alaska Education Association, and the National Education Association.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Marge Matson. She is survived by her brother, Spencer, of Kona, Hawaii, three nephews and one niece, many Juneau friends and former students, and special longtime friend, Rosie Hermes.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, at the Resurrection Lutheran Church. Donations in her name may be sent to the American Cancer Society or the Hospice and Home Care of Juneau, 3200 Hospital Drive, Juneau, AK 99801.
