RITES HELD FOR FORMER EB SUPERINTENDENT, GEORGE ABBOTT
A former Butler County resident, George Abbott, 48, superintendent of Creighton Community Schools, died Wednesday, July 1, of an apparent heart attack, The Creighton rescue squad responded to a call at his home and he died later at Lundberg Memorial Hospital. Services were held Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in David City. The Rev. Robert Hrdlicka officiated with burial in the parish cemetery. Military honors were conferred by members of Rejda Post No. 273 of the American Legion, Brainard. Pallbearers were Robert Polzin, Edwin Dvorak. Gary Maricle, David Wade, Earl Sedlacek and Norman Piller. Mr. Abbott had been superintendent at Creighton since 1978 and recently resigned to accept a similar post at Ellsworth, Kansas. Before coming to Creighton, he was superintendent of East Butler Public Schools at Brainard 1970-78 and was principal at public schools in Exira, lowa, 1969-70, Dickens, lowa, 1964-69 and at Bushnell 1961-64. The 1950 David City High School graduate received a bachelor's degree from Kearney State College in 1960, a master's degree in educational administration from the University of Montana in 1966 and a specialist's degree in educational administration in 1971. He did graduate work at the University of Nebraska, Wyoming, Iowa and Wayne. Mr. Abbott was born February 12, 1933, at David City, the son of Earl and Margaret Krey Abbott. He married Ramona Kobza on August 25, 1961, at David City. He was a Korean War veteran and member of the VFW post in Creighton and the American Legion post at Brainard. Surviving are his wife, two sons, Chuck and daughter in law Doris of West Bend, Iowa, and Todd at home, three daughters, Renee of Lincoln, Debbie and Tracie at home, one granddaughter and a sister, Mrs. Duane (Lillian) Moeller of David City.
