Mr. Abbate was a retired Presiding Judge for the Superior Court in Guam, having been the second judge selected for that position.
He was ordained a Permanent Deacon for the Archdiocese of
Washington on April 8, 1973 and served at St. Joseph’s Pomfret and Mt. Carmel Monastery.
He completed his undergraduate study in law at St. John’s in New York. Mr. Abbate graduated from Brooklyn Law School in June, 1953. He worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company while in law school. He was a practicing lawyer and Attorney General in Guam in 1966. He was a member
of the American Bar Association. In later years, he taught law at the College of Southern Maryland.
He was in the first graduating class of Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy in New York. He served as a Commander in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict. During his service time on the USS
Sheridan, while docked in Shanghai in 1944, he met his wife. He also served on the USS Repose. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He took part in the amphibious assault on the Marshall Islands, Guam, the Philippines, and other Japanese controlled islands in the South Pacific.
He was a member of the U.S. Naval Institute and the Naval Reserve. He was a Ham Radio operator, using the call letters “KG6RN.”
He was a member of the Republican National Committee. Having grandparents from Sicily,he read and spoke fluent Italian. He also loved to travel and enjoyed living in Guam.

Predeceased by his parents, two sons, Paul C. Abbate and Gregory
S. Abbate, and three sisters, Jeanne, Francis, and Rose Abbate.

Survived by his one son, Michael S. (Cindy) Abbate of California,
one daughter, Maria T. (John) Rossi of Blacksburg, Va., six
grandchildren, Dara Wood, Alina and Jenna Abbate, and Lisa,
Catherine, and Christina Rossi, and four great grandchildren, Zaya
and Soren Wood, Gregory Abbate, and Maya Isabelle Tluchak
Rossi.

Visitation on Friday, February 8, 2008 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm with
prayers at 7pm at Mt. Carmel Monastery Chapel, 5678 Mt. Carmel
Road, La Plata, Md.

Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, February 9, 2008 at 11am
at Mt. Carmel Monastery Chapel.

Clergy will be Father John Dillon

Interment at Mt. Carmel Monastery Cemetery, La Plata, Md.

Honorary Pallbearers will be United States Navy Honor Guard.
