Robert C. Callies, son of Julius and Fredricka Callies was born in Rochester, Minnesota, on June 11, 1888. He married Ella and together they had two children. Robert (Bob) and Ella moved to North Dakota and settled in Garrison, North Dakota where he became the janitor of the school on February 12, 1915. The first building he looked after in the early days was a wooden one without electricity. One of his duties was to keep the keosene lamps filled with fuel. The wooden school was razed in 1916 and was replaced by one that remained until 1955, when it was destroyed by fire.

While he had been on the job, Callies had seen his two children and two grandchildren attend the public school. A new elementary school was built in Garrison and it was only fitting that they named it Bob Callies School. Bob was well known at Bob Callies. He delivered milk to the classrooms each day! All students knew who he was and were respectful to him.

In 1961, Bob's wife Ella passed away and Bob passed away on July 19, 1972.
