Walker, 73, of Howell, MI, passed away at his home Friday, November 15, 2013. He was born to Arthur Anderson and Betty (Tanner) Aaron.

Walker came to Central Michigan in 1965, and over the past years, through his work and voluntary positions, has left a notable impact; some of which is visible on East Grand River in Howell, the surrounding neighborhoods and in the smiles of his family and friends. He often said, "The key to success is to always be prepared for the next role."

From his earliest job as a first-aid medic on the local emergency ambulance, through his adventures in the army, onto his 22 years of service in the Savings and Loan industry, and his years with friends on the golf course, he kept to his motto. Walker joined the U.S. Army in 1959. During his tour of duty as a SP-5, he was stationed in West Berlin while the Berlin Wall was constructed. Despite the international tensions, he was well-known for regularly hosting a friendly poker game.

After his military commitment, he tried his hand at several endeavors, including working at his Uncle Bob's flour mill, where he routinely handled 150 pounds bags of flour. He attended Kent State and Eastern Michigan Universities.

Eventually, he took a job as a teller at the First Federal Savings and Loan in Howell. Walker applied himself with a combination of personal graciousness and business practicality. In time, he became CEO and President.

He provided leadership through a tumultuous time in the industry, including the computerization of bank processes, the savings and loan crisis, and the eventual merger with another Michigan-based Savings and Loan.

He was past Chairman of Michigan League of Savings Institutions and Vice-Chairman of the Federal Home Loan Bank Board. The key to his success, Walker said, was to surround himself with the best people he could find, and let them do their job. In 1978, Walker and First Federal constructed the building at 611 East Grand River Avenue, which now houses the Offices for the City of Howell.

Along with his professional responsibilities, Walker participated in local economic development councils that encouraged and guided sensible growth in the Brighton and Howell communities. After retiring from First Federal, Walker continued to keep busy. He partnered with builder, Rick Willard, to construct over 150 homes in Livingston County. He also built a reputation for enjoying a game of golf with close friends as a member of the Chemung Hills Country Club and Lakeland Golf and Country Club. Walker would say, "You have to appreciate," it is a good life, good to have fine co-workers, warm friends, caring family, and good - really good - to be an American. And yes, good to hit a hole in one every now and then, which he did twice during his golfing career.

Aaron will be fondly remembered by his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy. Loving step-father of Michael (Michelle) Finch of Howell, Diane (Michael) Schultz of Brighton, Richard (Michelle) Bidwell of Byron Center; uncle to Pete, Zach and Cage Slagel and brother of Wylie (Donald) Schaffer.

Memorial services were held Tuesday, November 19 at Grace Lutheran Church, Howell.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace Lutheran Church or American Legion Devereaux Post #141.
