Cecil Abel Sr.

MOOREVILLE—Cecil Ward Abel, Sr., 70, died Tuesday, March 25, 1997, at his home in Mooreville after a sudden illness.

He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church and was an Army veteran of World War II, a Mason and a cattle farmer. He was a graduate of Duck Hill High School and received a bachelor's degree in business education, a master's degree in business education and a master's degree in administration from the University of Mississippi. He did additional study at Mississippi State University and the University of Iowa. He was the head of the Business Department at Northeast Mississippi Community College and a superintendent at Big Black High School in Kilmichael. He was an accounting instructor, guidance counselor, dean of students and academic dean and chairman of the business department at Itawamba Community College in Fulton from 1963-1984, when he retired. He was a member of the ICC board and the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway board.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 27, in the Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Dr. Bryant Barnes and the Rev. Elbert Boutwell officiating. Burial was in Lee Memorial Park.

Survivors include his wife, Marian Mann Abel of Mooreville; one daughter, Betty Abel Hester, and her husband, Danny, of Tupelo; two sons, Cecil Ward "Abe" Abel Jr. and his wife, Mary, of Mooreville, and John Mark Abel and his wife, Trudy, of Purvis; one sister, Jean Peets, and her husband, Charles, of Vicksburg; one sister-in-law, Roxie Abel of Duck Hill; his grandchildren, Lex Hester, Len Hester, Jenny Hester, Will Abel, Pat Abel, Josh Abel and Jake Abel.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Travis Abel.

Pallbearers were his grandsons.

Honorary pallbearers were Charles W. Murphy, James Carnathan, Reid Smith, Billy Todd and the Adult 3 Sunday School Class.

W.E. Pegues Funeral Home of Tupelo was in charge of arrangements.
