POCAHONTAS - Ronald Abens, 77, formerly of Gilmore City, died Thurs. Jan 2, 2014, at Pocahontas Manor Care Center. Funeral services will be held on Sat. Jan. 4, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, rural Palmer. Visitation will be at the church on Fri. Jan. 3 from 4 until 7 p.m. Burial will be in St. John Lutheran Cemetery, Lizard Township. Larson-Weishaar Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Ronald David Abens was born on March 25, 1936, near Gilmore City, IA, in Pocahontas County, the son of Waite D. and Maria (Gerdes) Abens. After receiving his education in country school, he began farming with his father. On June 11, 1955, he was united in marriage with Mildred VanHoveln at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Palmer, and together they farmed for their entire married life.
Ron is survived by his wife Mildred; his children Paul (Jenny) Abens of Gilmore City, IA; Linda (Rick) Fey of Palmer, IA; Bonnie (Terry) Roberts of Spencer, IA; Curt (Jane) Abens of Gilmore City, IA; 7 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; brothers Larry (Barb) Abens of Jay, OK; Eldon (Christina) Abens of Germany; sister Marlene Erickson of Ft. Dodge, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister Lucille Abens; and his granddaughter Amanda Fey.
