SOUTH BEND - Charlotte M. (Hoff) Lahey, "Nanny," 89, formerly of South Bend, IN, passed away quietly in the arms of her daughter, Mary, and with her family in Chesapeake, VA, on Wednesday, January 15, 2014. Charlotte was born on August 25, 1924, in Grafton, ND, to Edna and Glenn Berry. Charlotte was one of four incredible Irish sisters, Lucille "Cealy," Florence "Junie," Theresa "Effie." After graduating high school, mom served proudly for our country in the Waves "Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Services." She did her boot camp at Naval Air Station and was stationed at the Bronx, NY, as a pharmacy mate third class. Shortly after service, she moved to South Bend to join her mother and sisters who were already here. She met Paul M. Hoff and they were married at St. Matthew Church on January 14, 1950. The church was later elevated to a Cathedral. Paul and Charlotte were blessed with eight children: three daughters, Jane E. (Daniel) Harman Aaron of Lakeville, IN, Mary T. (Marc) Dyer of Chesapeake, VA, and Peggy A. (Tim) Breitenbach of Milford, OH; five sons, Paul E. (Karen) Hoff of Goshen, Tom (Jane) Hoff of South Bend, IN, Jeffery (Joanna Luppert) Hoff of South Bend, IN, Joel (Tracy) Hoff of South Bend, and Tony G. (Sara Chiri) Hoff of Mt. Dessert, MA. Life was full as Paul and Charlotte raised their feisty and rambunctious children. She was a member of the Knights of Columbus wives, Home and School Association, St. Matthew Cathedral and Rosary Society, Christ Child Society and St. Vincent de Paul Society. Paul passed away December 17, 1971, after a horrible auto accident on Miami Street. After several years and a world-wind courtship, Charlotte married James H. Lahey, also from the parish, who had lost his beloved wife, Ruby, earlier. She became Grandma Charlotte to the Lahey clan that included his children, Terry (Charles) Miller of Okemos, MI, Thomas (Sarah) Lahey of Tiburon, CA, Patrick (Mary) Lahey of Miami, FL, and Charles (Jennifer) Lahey of South Bend, IN, and grandchildren. The family made a wonderful friendship after years of Boy Scouts and parish activities together. The family had crazy huge fun picnics at the cottage on Diamond Lake that poppa had built. Our holidays were loud and fun and also included a house full of family. Nanny and Poppa were always proud to announce the numbers of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Nanny and Poppa were blessed to have many wonderful years together and enjoyed many trips and adventures while traveling with her sisters and their partners. Africa, Europe, South America and Mexico, and also Ft. Lauderdale, were favorites spots for winter getaways, fishing and travel. Poppa passed away December 28, 2000. Charlotte was a loving classy lady with a humongous heart and generous spirit. She worked tirelessly for others and never forgot what it was like to grow up with not a lot of money. She loved to crochet, making beautiful creations for her friends and family. Also making beautiful lap robes for folks in nursing homes around South Bend. For many years she worked with the St. Vincent de Paul Society making life better for others. She was a devoted member of her Cursillo Prayer Group and loved her sisters in Christ. After her double knee replacement in January of 2003, she sped through rehab because she missed her prayer group ladies and wanted to rejoin her groups and drive her new Buick. She was deeply devoted to her faith, especially Blessed Mother. Daily Rosary together with Poppa was the practice of Mom's for years. Charlotte was a wonderful cook, gracious hostess and a strong feisty Irish women with a wonderful sense of humor and a never-ending positive attitude. Sometimes life was difficult but she never gave up and used her powerful faith to get her through. Our heavy hearts will always miss our beloved Nanny but we rejoice that she has joined all her loved ones in Heaven. Godspeed gentle mama. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 18, 2014, at St. Matthew Cathedral, 1701 Miami St., South Bend, IN. Friends may visit with the family from 4:00-7:00 p.m. today at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St., South Bend, IN, where a Rosary will be said at 7:00 p.m. Contributions in memory of Charlotte M.
