Hazel Marie Finster, 85, of Bunker Hill now has an eternity of peace, comfort and joy after passing away early Monday morning Feb. 3, 2014, at Waterford Place in Kokomo.
Hazel was born Jan. 30, 1929, in New Castle to Burl and Mary Hartman Jones.
She met Noel Finster at a wrestling match at the Kokomo Armory, and they were married on Dec. 8, 1951. Hazel would tell you that they were happily wrestling together for the next 62 years, with her winning most of the time.
She attended Kokomo High School and later worked at Delco Electronics before moving to Bunker Hill, where she worked at Maconaquah Middle School as a cook. She was a devoted and loving wife and mother for her entire life. Hazel was a charter member of the Deer Creek Do-Ettes and a member of the Bunker Hill First Baptist Church, where she once taught Sunday School and helped with Vacation Bible School.
She enjoyed cooking, canning fresh vegetables grown by her husband along with sewing and planning parties. She collected Longaberger baskets and kerosene lamps and loved listening to WWKI and country music.
Hazel is survived by her husband and three children, Chuck Finster of Bunker Hill, Debra Nichols of Greenwood and Kay Eddy of Bunker Hill. Surviving also are two brothers, Paul Jones of Des Moines, Iowa, and Roy "Sam" Jones of Anderson, and a sister, Helen Aaron of Kokomo.
Surviving also are several nephews and nieces, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, whom Hazel loved very much.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Kathy Jo; four brothers, John, Morris, George and Frank; a half-brother, Merle Belt; and a sister, Leona Stage.
Hazel's family will greet friends from 3 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Allen Funeral Home, Bunker Hil. A memorial service and celebration of Hazel's life will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home with Pastor Charles Layne presiding. Burial will be at the Rankin Cemetery.
The family would like to extend their gratitude and thanks to Hazel's "second family," the staff at Fresenius Medicare Care, for the outstanding care they provided during 12 years of dialysis treatments. They also thank Dr. Melanie Bozard, Waterford Place and Guardian Angel Hospice.
Hazel also had many visits by Vickie Wood, her "traveling beautician," who would keep her up-to-date on the latest community news.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Guardian Angel Hospice or Bunker Hill First Baptist Church.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Allen Funeral Home.
