OBITUARY: Capt. Charles P. Abbott Jr. (w/ photo) - Deal Island - Capt. Charles Patrick "Junior," "Bubba," "Poppa" Abbott Jr., 58, of Edelen Webster Road was taken home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 16, 2002. Born on March 23, 1944, he was a son of Miriam E. Abbott of Wenona and the late Charles P. Abbott Sr. Charles graduated as valedictorian and was voted most likely to succeed in his 1962 senior class at Deal Island High School. He went on to Salisbury State College, now Salisbury University, intending to do something other than follow in his ancestor's footsteps (or boots). After leaving Salisbury State, he worked at DuPont Co. for three years before returning to his love, the Chesapeake Bay. The Abbott family tradition was to dredge for oysters under sail, in the beautiful broad-beamed, single-masted boat the skipjack Thomas Clyde. His greatest pleasure of life was working and patent tonging on the Wells Fargo with his son, C.P. Charles operated a crab shedding/peeler bait shop for 40 years at the foot of the Deal Island bridge. He was a lifetime member of the Deal Island-Chance Lions Club and the Maryland and Somerset County Watermen's Association. He is survived by his devoted wife of 38 years, Jeanne W. Abbott of Deal Island; three children, Cheryl Abbott Presock and her husband, Robert, of Salisbury, Charles P. "C.P." Abbott III of Deal Island, and Alice Abbott Henderson and her husband, James, of Salisbury; six grandchildren, Chelsea Jean Presock, Jacob Scott Hartman, Justin Charles Hartman, Jonathan Russell Hartman, Olivia Anne Hartman and Brittany Anne Harrison; two sisters, Judy E. Hoffman of Salisbury and Kandie Lee Pianka and her husband, Bruce, of Princess Anne; one brother, E. Allen Abbott of Wenona and his wife, Lori; nieces, Barbara Wattay of Salisbury and her husband, David, Tina Willey of Salisbury and her husband, Gene, and Denise Abbott of Princess Anne; nephews, Kip Holland of Stockton and his wife, Debbie, Wayne Abrams Jr. of Pocomke City, Jason Abbott of Mount Vernon and Luke Abbott of Rock Hall, Md.; an uncle and close friend, Raymond Abbott of Federalsburg and his wife, Donna; aunts, Jeanne Webster of Eden and her husband, Price, and Leila White of Wenona; a devoted sister-in-law, Nan Harrison of Princess Anne; brothers-in-law, Glen and Danny Webster of Deal Island and Ricky and Dougie Webster of Ashland, Va.; and special friends, Brian Piercy and Jack Willing. A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at St. John's United Methodist Church in Deal Island. Friends may call at the church tonight from 7 to 9 and Wednesday one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Henry Zollinhofer will officiate. Interment will be in St. Paul's United Methodist Cemetery in Wenona. Arrangements are being handled by Hinman Funaeral Home in Princess Anne.
