Janice Marie Alsobrook came into this world on Sept. 29, 1964. Parents Ray "J" and Barbara Fern (Allen) Alsobrook welcomed her with open arms and hearts. She joined her sister Margie, and two years later they welcomed their brother Mike. They were among the family and friends that were with her as she made her final journey from this world.
Jan broke free from the chains that bound her in this life on the evening of Feb. 13, 2014. Earlier that day she faced the news of her mortality with strength and courage and fought that last battle well. There again with open arms to meet her were her parents and older brother Jackie Ray, whom she had not met in this life.
Missing her infectious laugh and sparkling blue eyes are brother and sister, Mike Alsobrook and Margie Wood, niece Jenny and husband Bill Bashore, nephew Matt Wood, great nieces Taylor and Erin, great nephew Ian Bashore, and longtime faithful and furry companion Trigger.
The Alsobrook family moved to Dolores from Wyoming in 1976. Jan attended school there until the family relocated to Cortez after purchasing The Hair Affair in 1979. She was a 1983 graduate of Montezuma-Cortez High School then attended cosmetology school in Durango and became a licensed cosmetologist working at The Hair Affair in Cortez for many years.
Jan was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and enjoyed her many callings, especially working in the genealogy library. She also enjoyed singing in the choir, photography, traveling, scrapbooking, and watching movies. Trips to the mountains in the fall to see the changing colors were one of her favorite things. She loved animals and adopted many homeless pets over the years. She never met a stranger, had a good heart, and would do just about anything she could to help someone out.
She touched the lives of so many people and will be deeply missed and forever remembered for the uniqueness that was Jan.
A gathering to celebrate her life will be held Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014, in the gym at the Empire Street LDS Church in Cortez, Colo., from 4 to 6 p.m. Bring a dish to share if you would like and come as you are to share your memories of Janice. Cremation has taken place, and a graveside service at Cedar Grove cemetery in Mancos, Colo., will be held in the spring.
