Mary Claire Abair Pierce

Mary Claire Abair Pierce died Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, at her home in Pagosa Springs. She was 86.

Mrs. Pierce was born to Mary Ann and Barney Abair in Waterbury, Vt., on Aug. 5, 1927. She graduated from high school in Vermont in 1945.

On March 22, 1947, she married Harland Pierce in Vermont and they had nine children.

The family started out in Vermont and grew as they traveled west, according to family. Her husband was a truck driver and heavy-equipment operator. Their children were born in Vermont, South Dakota and various places in Colorado.

The family settled in Pagosa Springs in the early 1950s.

The family enjoyed the outdoors. Mrs. Pierce would pack up camping and picnic supplies (no small feat for a family of 11, plus a few extras), and off they would go for a few days of fishing, food and fun at a mountain lake or stream. Digging for worms was a family occupation because that was how the kids made spending money – selling worms at $1 per 100, or a penny each.

She enjoyed gardening and providing for her family.

Later, the family owned and operated Mary's Laundry, Dry Cleaning and Car Wash in Pagosa Springs, and Mrs. Pierce continued to run that business after her husband's death in 1983. In 1997, her health compelled her to sell the business. She then delivered prescriptions for Jackisch Drug in town.

Mrs. Pierce was preceded in death by her husband, Harland Pierce and sons Bob Pierce and Butch Pierce.

She is survived by daughters Mary Etta Ault, of Jessieville, Ark., Linda Cundiff of Bayfield, Rita Strickland of Pagosa Springs; sons Bill Pierce of Maud, Texas, Buck Pierce of Pagosa Springs, Bruce Pierce of Elmo, Utah, and Brad Pierce of Pagosa Springs; 19 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A rosary was held Sunday, March 9, 2014, and a funeral will take place at 10 a.m. today, March 10, 2014, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 445 Lewis St., in Pagosa Springs. Burial will be at Hilltop Cemetery in Pagosa Springs.
Durango Herald, Dgo. CO. March 10, 2014.
