VERDA FLORENCE NEWLIN passed peacefully from this life Thursday evening, March 13, 2014, in her home.

Born April 17, 1928 in Arcadia, Texas, Mrs. Newlin was a lifelong resident of the area. She was a graduate of Santa Fe High School Class of 1946, a Santa Fe Band Booster President for 25 years and a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. She spent her time educating others as a Sunday school teacher, including Vacation Bible School and even adult crafts at College of the Mainland for 25 years. Verda loved dancing, music, flowers and traveling, especially on cruises. She enjoyed homemaking; as well as, she was an exceptional seamstress, cook and candy maker when she was not volunteering at HIS Ministry Food Pantry. She also found great joy from her Bluebonnets and 13 year old best friend, her tuxedo cat, Tango.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred Joe and Vera (Aaberg) Netter; brothers, Leland "Buck" Netter and Leon "Smokey" Netter.

Survivors include her loving husband of over 66 years, James Willburn Newlin; daughters, Debbie Newlin of Dickinson, Janie Newlin Gill and husband, Boyd of Texas City; sister, Polly Jessup of Santa Clara, California; granddaughters, Andrea and Cristina Gill both of Texas City; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 21, 2014, in the chapel of Hayes Funeral Home, with Pastor Bill Cole officiating. Interment will follow at Hayes Grace Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be David Coney, Jessie Covington, Peter DeGroot, Harold Landry, Tito Rojas and Clay Ruyle.

Visitation with the family will be from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, 10412 Highway 6, Hitchcock, TX (409) 925-3501.

The family would like to send a special thank you to the Hospice Care Team of Texas City and to her Crisis Care Nurses, especially Peggy and Tim.

In lieu of usual remembrances, memorial contributions in Verda's name may be made to the Hospice Care Team, Inc., 1708 Amburn, Suite C., Texas City, Texas 77591.
