An Old Soldier Gone.
Edward B. Smith, a veteran of the Civil war, died at his home in this city, Tuesday evening, March 6, 1900, the result of a series of paralytic strokes, suffered the past , few days. The funeral service wiIl be held at the Methodist church Thursday (tomorrow) afternoon at 2 p. m., being in charge of the G. A.R. post, of this city, of which he was an honored member, assisted by the W. R. C., Rev. J. V. Bennett officiating.
Mr. Smith was born in 1833, a native of Erie, Penn. At an early age be came to Ill., in 1842, and later, 1846, came to Fennimore, afterwards settling in Green River valley where he followed farming until he retired from active work, removing with his family to this city seven years ago. He was married in Nov., 1868, to Miss Mary Clinger, who with five children remain to mourn his departure. One child preceded him, the living being Mrs. Josephine Abbey, of Crooked Creek, Col.; Mrs. Geo. Sabins, of Boscobel; George and Misses Etta and Dora, also of Boscobel.
Deceased had a good war record and his comrades and associates will miss his presence keenly. Among the important battles he was engaged in were Prairie Grove, Ark, Vicksburg, Brownsville, Yazoo Valley and Mobile.
