He graduated from Van Buren High School. He worked for Columbia Records/Sony Music in Terre Haute, transferring to Carrollton, Georgia in the early ‘80s. He retired after 38 years with the company. He was a member of BPO Elks. He especially enjoyed IU basketball.
He was preceded in death by his father.
In addition to his mother, Sarah Walker Webster, he is survived by his wife Susan Bennett Abernathy; two daughters, Lee Ann Rhine of Carrollton, Georgia and Jana Kennedy of Brazil; one son, Russ Abernathy and his wife Dehabra of Bremen, Georgia; five grandchildren, Joshua Rhine, Sarah Anne Kennedy, Will Kennedy, Dylan Abernathy and Benjamin Abernathy; and one sister and her husband, Rita and Hank Sallady of Hudson, Florida. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Anne Bennett of Brazil; one brother-in-law and his wife, Jeff and Barbara Bennett; and one sister-in-law and her husband Julie and Clark Ahrens.
