Johnny Jennings Purkey, 90, passed away Aug. 15, 2016 at Regency Retirement Village in Morristown, TN. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran and served in the South Pacific during World War II. He was named after his grandmother, Johnnie Jackson Purkey.

He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Ethel Jones Purkey; brothers, Arlie and Carroll; sisters, Eula Burnette and Lena Mae Lampkin; step-sister Stella Barbre Buchannan, and his loving wife of 64 years Edith Bunch Purkey.

He is survived by daughter and son-in-law Delores and Henry Drinnon of Morristown; daughter, Darlene Atkins; son and daughter-in-law Darrell and Janeese Purkey all of Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren, Angela McGinn, Amy Christy, Andy Drinnon and Josh Atkins; as well as six great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank Regency Retirement Village, Amedisys Home Health and Hospice, Dr. Michael A. Tan and his staff and those who sat with their loved one during his final days.

The family receive friends from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18 in the East Chapel of Allen Funeral Home. Funeral services followed at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Fred Lehrer officiating. Friends and family proceeeded to Hamblen Memory Gardens for a military graveside service and interment.
