Nels was the son of Ingvald G. Steen (b. 4/1862, Norway) and Ingeborg Steen (b. 2/1869, Norway). He had at least seven siblings, all born in South Dakota; Gustav (b. 6/1889-1890), Martin (b. 11/1890-1891), Ida (b. 5/1893), Sophia "Susie" (b. 1/1897), Agnes (b. 3/1900), Inga (b. 1903), & Elveria (b. 1909).

Nels married Angilee. They had at least two children; Edwin L. (b. 1920, SD) & Shirley (b. 1924, SD).
