Mr. Abel, widower of Kay Newman Abel, passed away January 19, 2011. He was the son of the late Ashley and Marie Abel. A resident of Johnston, SC, since 1959, Ashley was a licensed land surveyor and registered forester who dearly loved the land and people of Edgefield county and surrounding counties. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1955. He was a member of the S.C. National Guard from 1956-1979. A founding member of Edgefield County Republican Party, he was a past president and member of the Johnston Jaycees. A member of Pine Ridge Country Club and Johnston Sertoma Club, he also served as chairman of the Edgefield County School Board. He was a member of Johnston United Methodist Church.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Ashley and Kimberly Abel of Greenville, SC; a daughter and son-in-law, April and Scott Long of Myrtle Beach, SC; and five grandchildren, Ash and Marjorie Abel and Grace-McLane, Miller and Grainger Long.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Gretchen Glacken of Staten Island, NY.
