Laura Evalina Abernethy, 82, died at a Lincoln hospital Nov. 7, following a protracted illness. She was born at Nebraska City Nov. 6, 1867, the year Nebraska became a state, to George and Josephine Abernethy. In 1871 the family moved to a government homestead in Gage county.
Eight years later Mr. Abernethy bought a farm in Johnson county. Upon the death of his wife, he married again. In 1901 the family moved to what has since been known as the Abernethy farm in the north part of Noble township in Valley county. When Mr. Abernethy died in 1906, Mrs. Julia Abernethy, Harry and Laura moved to Ord.
Mrs. Abernethy died in 1922. Harry and Laura moved to California and remained until 1933, when Harry entered the Veterans hospital in Lincoln and died in 1934. Laura from that time until her fatal illness made her home with the Horace Davis family at 521 South 29th Street in Lincoln.
Laura Abernethy attended Nebraska State University. She was a member of the Methodist church at Elk Creek and at Ord. She was also active in PEO, in the Woman's club of Ord, in the library and in civic works.
She is survived by a brother, G. E. Abernethy of Elk Creek, nephews Raymond of Lincoln, George of Canada, and nieces in British Columbia, Washington and California. A sister-in-law, Mrs. Mabel Abernethy, lives in Ord. Brothers, Will, Harry and Jason preceded Laura in death.
After cremation, the ashes will be interred in the family lot in Ord. Short graveside services will be held at the Abernethy grave, weather permitting, Sunday afternoon at 2:30 with Rev. L. V. Hassell officiating.
