Grew up in White Stone and graduated from White Stone High Schhol at the age of 15. She attended Harrisonburg Teachers College (James Madison Univesity) and then taught school for eight years, six at Irvington and two at White Stone, before marrying and moving to Sparps. In 1952, she became postmaster of the Sharps Post Office and worked thre until her retirement in 1982. She was a loyal member of Milden Presbyterian Church in Shaprs and an active participant in the women's organizations, the Sunday School and many other programs sponsored by the church.
