Ivan C. Abegglen, lifelong resident of Wilford and St. Anthony, passed away Tuesday, September 9, 2014, at Homestead Assisted Living Center in Rexburg .

He was born on October 28, 1921, in Wilford, Idaho, the first of three sons born to Laurence Edward and Mary Agnes (Hansen) Abegglen. He grew up in Wilford where he attended the Wilford School through the eighth grade and then enrolled at St. Anthony High School where he excelled as both a student and track athlete, graduating in 1940.

He then enlisted in the Army National Guard and went to Fort Lewis, Washington, for basic training. While there, a medical examination revealed heart damage from a bout of rheumatic fever when he was a child, and he was discharged from military duty. Ivan returned to St. Anthony where he began working at the Triple A office. At the urging of the secretaries there, he began dating Paulleen Rydalch and, after a brief courtship, they were married on December 11, 1942. They were sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple on December 11, 1957. Ike and Paulleen lived in St. Anthony until they were able to purchase a seven-acre property in Wilford, and they lived there until the home was destroyed during the Teton Dam disaster in 1976. At that time, they moved back to St. Anthony to a home on North Bridge Street. After Paulleen passed away on February 3, 2012, Ike continued to live on his own until a fall at home in early July made it necessary for him to move to the Homestead Assisted Living Facility.

He left his job at the Triple A to become a rural mail carrier for the United States Post Office, and he worked there for more than 30 years. He was the secretary of the Wilford Cemetery District as well as a commissioner for the Fremont County Fire District for many years. Following his retirement, he and Paulleen spent the winter months in Mesa, Arizona, where they made many new friends from throughout the U. S. and Canada.

Ivan was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he served faithfully in many callings, including Explorer Scout leader, counselor in two bishoprics and a branch presidency at the Youth Training Center, coach, and faithful home teacher. He received the Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts of America for his many years of service as a scout leader and district commissioner.

Ivan is survived by his son Donn of Molalla OR; daughters Julie Ann (Richard) Hill of Idaho Falls and Diane of West Jordan UT; grandchildren: Heather (Darin) Penni of Colton OR; Libby Hill and Jedd (Kimberly) Hill of Herriman UT; and Brian (Jana Kae) Hill of Iona; great-grandchildren: Megan, Brooke, Kendall, and Natalie Penni; McKenzee Pullen; and Mercedes, Bentley, Savanna, Shelby, McKenzie, Ivan, and Owen Hill. He was preceded in death by his wife, Paulleen; his sons Paul and Larry; his parents; and all of his siblings: Glen (Anita) Abegglen; Lucille (Lowell) Palmer; Kenneth (Verba) Abegglen; Gene (Donna) Abegglen; Guinevere (Earl) Ziemer; Blanche(George) Larsen; Gladys (Golden) Hiatt; and Gerald (Rose) Cahoon.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Homestead Assisted Living, especially Michele Pacheco, and Aspen Home Health and Hospice, especially Ambria Wright and Mary Henry, for their compassion, concern, and tender care of our dad/grandfather. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 13, at the St. Anthony 3rd Ward chapel. The family will visit friends from 10 to 10:45 prior to services. Burial will be in the Wilford Cemetery under the direction of Bert Flamm Mortuary. The family suggests contributions in Ivan's name be made to the St. Anthony Senior Citizens "Meals on Wheels" Program or the Perpetual Education Fund.
