Mineral County Independent News 30 May 1945
"Clarence Adams, of Babbit, met death by drowning last Sunday evening, it was learned this week. Adams had been employed as an automobile mechanic at Moyle's garage for the past several months. Adams had worked in the garage last Sunday and early in the evening left to take his family and two friends for a drive around Walker lake. After passing the naval reservation, the mechanic stopped his car and the two men waled down to the shore of the lake. When the men were near the water, a wind came up suddenly and blew Adams' hat into the lake. He waded into the water a short distance attempting to retrieve the hat and then went back to shore. Later he attempted to swim out after the hat and succeeded in getting the headpiece and started back for the shore when suddenly he disappeared under water.
The friend on the bank thought at first that Adams was enjoying the swim until he appeared on the surface and once more went under water. The man then went in after the drowning man and succeeded in reaching him and bring him to the surface. The rescuer found that the current was so strong at that point that he would be unable to swim ashore and was forced to abandon the drowning man to save his own life. the body disappeared once more and today searchers had been unable to locate it, according to information from Loyd Wilson, Mineral county sheriff. Adams was born in Kansas City, Missouri, 31 years ago from Edwardsville, Illinois. He is survived by his wife and one daughter, Sara Ellen, a student in the second grade at the Hawthorne primary school."

The body of Clarence Adams was found June 10th by Sheriff Loyd Wilson and his wife, Mrs. Wilson. The Sheriff had been making daily trips to the lake since the drowning occurred. Sheriff Wilson stayed with the body while Mrs. Wilson drove back to Hawthorne to obtain assistance. Lowell Moody, Hawthorne fire chief then assisted with the recovery. Death by accidental drowning was handed down by Justice of the Peace T. M. Conelly. Wilson believes the man suffered a cramp while in cold water and became panic stricken making him unable to reach shallow water.
