He was born in Starkey Virginia, son of the late Mata and Mary Abe. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, Joyce “Pat” Abe and a brother Farmer Abe.
He is survived by his daughters: Susan Abe and Elizabeth Abe, grandchildren; David Guynn and Elle Zeller, sister Fairy Kesler and numerous nieces and nephews.
Hugh exaggerated his age during WWII and joined the US Army. When the Army realized several years later they had signed up an underage soldier, they offered to send him home or let him transfer to another branch. He transferred to the US Air force serving with distinction for many years before retiring. He and his wife lived around the world during this time. After his retirement he returned to Roanoke and worked for the US Post office.
He served in the Roanoke County Electoral Board, Past President of U.S. Postal Clerks Union, Life member of USAF Sergeant’s Association, and the DAV.
Funeral service will be held 10:00 AM Saturday, October 18, 2014 at Oakey’s South Chapel, Pastor Greg Mills will officiate and interment with Military Honors will follow at the Abe Family Cemetery at his home place in Roanoke County. In Lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the DAV.
The family will receive friends for one hour prior to service time at Oakey’s South Chapel
