Oldest son of Dannett Abney. Married 1728 to Unity Meredith(by some accounts).

George Abney was granted land between 1728 & 1760 in Hanover, Henrico, Lunenburg and Halifax Counties, VA...per R.R. Abney.

George's land in Henrico County is in today's City of Richmond, VA....... Mary Lee Abney died after 21 Jul 1739. From the Abney Book: "Although some genealogists claim the widow Mary Abney died in Hanover Co., VA the author believes she died in Henrico Co., VA. Sometime between 1735 & 1739, the widow Mary Abney moved to Henrico Co., VA where two of her other sons, Abraham & GEORGE resided on Gillies Creek (Montrose Heights) near the Old Osborne Turnpike. "On 21 Jul 1739 widow Mary Abney was a neighbor" of her son GEORGE Abney in Henrico Co., VA: GEORGE Abney appointed Precessioner. He lists property adjoining "the Widow Abney". There can be on doubt that "the Widow Abney" was Mary his mother."

"The land George purchased in Lunenburg/Halifax was along the Catawba Creek off the Staunton (Roanoke) River. Here he lived for almost twenty years with his family near his brothers Abraham and Dannett (Jr.)and other relatives amassing a good-sized estate of over 1000 acres. George was active in the affairs of his community. He served as a constable, was appointed a surveyor of roads in Halifax and also a "processioner" by Antrim Parish as he had been in Henrico County. Samuel's father George Abney died in Halifax County, VA in 1766 leaving a will that divided his land holdings among four of his five sons."..per A.H. Brewer.

Children of George & Unity:1)Dannett m. Cassandra Abney, 2) Nathaniel m. Isabella Madison, 3)Dorcas m. Mattox Mays m2. William Hill, 4) Samuel, Sr. m. Martha Hamilton, 5) William m. Mary Clark m2. Eliz Burnham, 6) Michael m. Ann Turner.

George Abney died on 01 Oct 1766 in Halifax Co., VA, a year after writing his last will and testament. No proof of burial but a cenotaph* is placed here since he was very involved in the Parish church. More information is needed.

Notes the owner of these two memorial will not accept:
Unity Meredith, #23921370 1704-1741
Martha Collins #23942130 1720-1781
Unity was signing deeds as late as 1762 and was in court cases even after her husband's death in 1769 so could not have died in 1741.

Martha Collins! Is she the mythical woman Agatha Abney Woodson made up back in the 1920s? Where did Mrs. Duffy get her from? Based on the birth and death dates she provides for the two women, you would think Martha was the second wife, but it would appear that Unity was the widow of George Abney. (I've realized that there is no proof that Unity was the mother of George's children, but Duffy's Martha Collins does not appear to be able to be their mother.
