Mrs. Elena Abney Hickman passed away Thursday, August 13, 2009 at the Smith County Health Care where she had been a resident for 2 years. She was born May 23, 1921 in Cookeville, Putnam Co., TN., the daughter of the late Cora Randolph and Hyram Abney. She was preceded in death by Three Sisters: Ruby Abney, Pauline Abney and Irene Woodard; Two Brothers: Harvey and Leroy Abney and a Granddaughter, Michelle Hickman. She was married on November 22, 1939 to Elder Joe B. Hickman, who preceded her in death on March 11, 1988. She was saved at the age of 15 at New Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church under Bro. Phocian Gibbs, preaching. She was a Missionary Baptist in belief and lived her life for the Lord until her death. She was a wonderful Mother to Four Children who survive her: Three Sons: Bill (Lillian) Hickman of Canton, Ohio; Jerry Hickman of Carthage, TN and David Hickman of Carthage, TN. Daughter, Linda (Jack) Carte of Elmwood, TN. 13 Grandchildren, 20 Great Grandchildren and 4 Great-Great Grandchildren. Two Sisters: Mary Edith McGowan of Buffalo Valley, TN and Doris (J.B.) Durham of Smyrna, TN. Mrs. Hickman’s remains are at the Carthage Chapel of Bass Funeral Homes where Services will be held on Sunday, Aug. 16, 2009 at 3:00 P.M. with Elders: Rickey Hall and Charles Allen Gentry, officiating. Interment will follow in New Macedonia Cemetery, Chestnut Mound, TN.The Hickman family will receive friends at the Carthage Chapel on Saturday from 11:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. and on Sunday from 10:00 A.M. until service time at 3:00 P.M.
