Sophie Rebecca Kaplan

Sophie Rebecca Kaplan, 85, passed away Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at Ashton Parke Care Center in Texas City. She was born on July 2, 1929 in Galveston, Texas, to the Late Sadie and Frank Mandel. Passing before her, was her beloved husband, Isaac David “Speedy” Kaplan. Her two brothers, Aaron & Louis Mandel, sister Ida Lee Doner and husband Nathan and her brother-in-law, Sol Kaplan.
She attended school in Galveston, Texas where she graduated from Ball High School in 1947.

On June 12, 1949 she married Isaac David Kaplan and this marriage lasted 43 years. To this union, two sons were born, Leon and Frank Kaplan.

Sophie loved to cook, take care of her husband, children and her special grand-daughter Rachel Sara. She worked in the family business, Speedy’s Printing, in Galveston for many years. Sophie was a life long member of Congregation Beth Jacob Synagogue, loved going to services and Sisterhood meetings and activities. She was also a lifetime member of Hadassah. She enjoyed visiting friends in area nursing homes and in their homes.

Sophie leaves to mourn her passing: Her sons, Leon and daughter-in-law, Mynde Eisen and Frank and daughter-in-law, Arriene; Her loving grand-daughter, Rachel Sara Kaplan; Three sister-in-laws, Esther Kaplan of Dickinson, Texas; Frances Mandel of Sun City, Arizona and Rose “Precious” Mandel of San Antonio, Texas; numerous nieces and nephews and many relatives & friends.

Graveside Services will be held at Congregation Beth Jacob Cemetery, 61st Street and Avenue T on Sunday, October 19, 2014 at 2:00 p.m, with Rabbi Todd Doctor officiating.

In lieu of flowers, The Kaplan Family, because Sophie loved it so much, suggests donations be made to Congregation Beth Jacob, P.O. Box 750, Galveston, Texas 77553.
