COLUMBIA - Services for Mattie Kirkland Rutland, 82, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at North Trenholm Baptist Church with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to North Trenholm Baptist Church Mission Fund. Serving as pallbearers will be John Watson, Grady Majors, Steve Hefner, Walter Tyler, Steve Reeves and Gene Taylor. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge.

Mrs. Rutland died Friday, March 7, 2003. Born in Kershaw County, she was the youngest daughter of the late John Lee Kirkland Sr. and Beatrice Mills Kirkland. She had retired from Seibels-Bruce and Company. She was a member of North Trenholm Baptist Church where she served in various ministries including working with the children and teaching the senior adult TEL Sunday School Class for 10 years. In her later years, she was a member of the Quattlebaum Class.

Surviving are her husband of 60 years, Chief Warrant Officer Third Class (Ret.) Roger Marion Rutland; daughters and sons-in-law, Rubye and Rodney Hunsberger of Gaston and Elaine and Lt. Col. (Ret.) Joel Helms of Atlanta; grandchildren, Roger A. Sobeck, Cheryl L. Sobeck, Lt. Cdr. Philip E. Sobeck, Julie Anne Morris, Shannon R. Helms, Joel A. Helms Jr.; five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by brothers, John Lee Kirkland Jr., Robert Gary Kirkland, Harry Kirkland, Peter Kirkland, Edward Kirkland, Joseph Kirkland and Hyman Kirkland and sisters, Jessie Huckabee, Anna Gulley, Lenora Aaron and Irene Lybrand.
